M15V Control Pack 1 or 2: every M15V pack I see has some sort of mechanical defect which must be serviced before new batteries can be installed. Ex.: burned up mode switch or a jammed test button that will run batteries down and make recharging impossible.

I build custom NiMH clusters for these control packs. NiMH rebuilds come with a special charge instructions. These cells can be sensitive to overcharging. Cells may be damaged if left charging overnight with the original Olympus charger. There IS no other charger. You could say the original Olympus Nicad Charger for the M15V Control Pack is "stupid" as it can't tell when the pack is charged and with nicads, it didn't matter. With NiMH batteries, the Olympus charger MUST be plugged into a timer which will shut it off after a FULL charge of 15 hours. After limited or light use, topping off the charge is safe but it must be limited and also timed. "Top off" time is experimental (4-6 hours). It is the responsibility of the end user to determine the best times for a full charge or topping off. See * to the right. Camtech is not responsible for any damage that may result due to the charging cycle used by the end user. No warranty on installations or battery life. Though the 1/3AA designation would suggest they are smaller than the nicad 1/3A cells, these are almost identical in physical size. Thank you to Jim Baker for charging tips.

Motor Drive Nicad Pack rebuilds: *The trick with recharging NiMH cells is that they have to be OVERCHARGED 50% to achieve FULL charge. THE FOLLOWING APPLIES ONLY TO MOTOR DRIVE 1/2 M15V CONTROL PACKS THAT HAVE BEEN CONVERTED TO NiMH BATTERIES. 12 - 1/3AA - 300mah cells in series . The Olympus charger is labeled as 36ma, but actually puts out about 30. 300 mah cells divided by 30 (charger) = 10 hours. 50% overcharge equals 15 hours for full charge. NiMH pack should be topped off every month or two if not used.

(2) A note on the possibility of installing Lithium Polymer (LiPo) cells in the Olympus M15V Nicad Control Packs 1 and 2 instead of Nickel-Metal Hydride cells. LiPo batteries may have some more appealing operating characteristic, but are finicky. First they cannot be soldered end to end (in series) and charged with the original charger. When over-charged this way, they WILL CATCH FIRE AND EXPLODE. These batteries would require a new dedicated charger plug and matching charger that would charge each internal cell separately. CPS does not endorse this modification. Be wary of anyone suggesting to do this mod for you. NiMH is your only safe option.

Limited warranty on some models due to limited parts availability. As marked, very old models carry repair warranty limited to area of repair only. In most cases, no major parts available for these very old models. No warranty on main circuits for OM-2S, 3, 3Ti, 4, 4T, 4Ti, XA Series, OM-10, G, 20, F, 30, PC, 40. 30 day warranty on NiMH battery clusters. All lenses of a certain model will not necessarily exhibit the same sharpness lens to lens. IE lenses that in the mind of the end user may have resolution issues cannot be made "sharper".
